DMG Papago Family Practice offers walk-in and same day care to patients of all ages

PHOENIX () — District Medical Group (DMG), a Phoenix-based non-profit medical group comprised of more than 650 providers across more than 25 medical specialties, has opened a primary care clinic at 1805 N. Scottsdale Road on the Scottsdale-Tempe border, conveniently located north of the 202 highway off the Rural Road exit.  Called DMG Papago Family Practice, the location serves patients of all ages offering preventive medical care as well as acute care for common illnesses and minor injuries.

”We are thrilled to expand our footprint to serve residents and visitors of Scottsdale and Tempe by providing primary care services by appointment as well as walk-in care,” said Kote Chundu, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of DMG. “Our goal is to continue to grow and offer quality, accessible medical care to patients of all ages close to home. This clinic provides us the opportunity to bring medical services to a community that needs additional primary care providers.”

The location was formerly a primary care clinic run by UnitedHealthcare (UHC), which closed in October 2019.  Recognizing the need for primary care providers to serve this diverse area, which includes established residential neighborhoods, newly constructed and existing apartment complexes, employers, hotels, Skysong Innovations, and Arizona State University, DMG stepped in to fill the gap and support the community.

The DMG Papago Clinic is open Monday-Friday, 7:30am-5:30pm.  Appointments can be scheduled by calling (602) 470-5550; walk-in care is also available.  Medical services offered include but are not limited to:

  • Care for minor injuries
  • Immunizations
  • School and sports physicals
  • Treatment of common illnesses, such as cold, flu and allergy symptoms
  • Wellness exams, including well-child medical exams

Opening on June 14, this location will serve patients of all ages offering appointments, including same day, as well as walk-in care.

Citywide Commercial Inks Major Medical Lease Renewal at Park Central

April 22, 2020/ District Medical Group

DMG Children’s Rehabilitative Services continues presence at growing medical hub

PHOENIX, April 20, 2020 – Boutique metro Phoenix brokerage firm Citywide Commercial has completed a 56,000-square-foot lease renewal that keeps District Medical Group’s (DMG) Children’s Rehabilitative Services at Park Central, a rapidly emerging hub for medical education and services in Phoenix’s midtown submarket.

The lease will extend DMG’s presence at Park Central for 10 years and continue its participation in the revitalization of Park Central – an effort directed by Plaza Companies and Holualoa Companies to transform the city’s first large-scale mall into an almost 500,000-square-foot mixed-use project.

Most recently, this transformation has included a strong medical focus with the groundbreaking of a new $100 million Creighton University health sciences campus, able to support nearly 900 students, and activity by the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance. Supported by Creighton University, Dignity Health, Valleywise Health (formerly Maricopa Integrated Health System) and DMG, the Alliance is based out of Park Central and focuses on expanding physician education and training in the Valley.

“Park Central is quickly becoming a major new medical hub in Phoenix, both for education and for patient services,” said Citywide Commercial Senior Vice President Bo Sederstrom, who represented DMG in their lease negotiations. “This is great news for Phoenix, which consistently ranks as one of the fastest growing populations in the nation. Groups like DMG will help us to keep pace with that growth and the associated rise in demand for quality medical care.”

DMG Children’s Rehabilitative Services is the only multi-specialty interdisciplinary clinic in Maricopa County providing care to Arizona children with special needs. Located at 3141 N. 3rd Ave. in Phoenix, on the southwest corner of Central Avenue and Osborn Road, the office serves infants through age 21 with over 85 medical providers and more than 25 pediatric specialties. It also provides services ranging from labs and X-rays to education and support. DMG has been a tenant at Park Central since 2013.

Make-A-Wish® Arizona and District Medical Group pilot program to increase wish kid opportunities

April 10, 2018/ District Medical Group

by Hollie Costello & Toni EberhardtMake-a-Wish-and-DMG-CRS-1200x423

Make-A-Wish® Arizona, the local chapter of the international wish granting organization, and District Medical Group (DMG), a Phoenix-based non-profit medical group comprised of more than 650 providers across medical specialties, are piloting a unique referral process to increase life-changing wish opportunities for eligible children receiving care at Arizona’s Children’s Rehabilitative Services (CRS), Phoenix.

The “Medical Champions” program was created by DMG using their electronic medical records (EMR) system to better identify and track children with critical illnesses who would qualify for a wish experience. Ensuring patient privacy, the team contacts the parents of its patients and assists them through the referral process so their child might benefit from a wish experience. With more than 16 staff members on board for the pilot, DMG has referred more than 22 wish kids since June 2017. Before the program, the team had referred 40 kids total over three years.

”We believe healthcare is more than administering clinical care; it is helping patients attain the life experiences they wish for by using the resources we have available,” said Troy Nelson, MD, DMG Medical Director at CRS. “We are thrilled to partner with Make-A-Wish Arizona and expand the use of our EMR to help young patients start the wish process.”

This innovative approach to referring new children for wishes has built a stronger relationship with medical professionals for Make-A-Wish Arizona. The chapter is excited to see if the program can be templated for other physician offices, hospitals and clinics.

“Medical professionals are an important referral source for our wish kids because they understand the value a wish can have on a patient’s medical journey,” said Jennifer Fleming, Intake and Medical Outreach Manager. “With this new system in place, DMG medical professionals can reach out to Make- A-Wish when their patients are most in need of the happiness and strength a wish can create.”

For wish mom Maria Beteta, the wish experience created for her son, Marcos, went above and beyond what she ever considered possible. Marcos, 14, lives with critical idiopathic epilepsy. His wish was to “meet” his favorite Disney characters.

“Marcos’ wish was a great, unique experience not only for Marcos, but for my entire family,” said Beteta. “To see my children so excited, so surprised by many things. My greatest happiness was looking at my son, Marcos, so surprised. His eyes shined with such emotion. He loved all the services that they gave my family. We all did not want the day to end.”

Major Valley Healthcare Providers Announce New Health Education Alliance

October 22, 2017/ District Medical Group

As originally posted on MIHS website September 28, 2017

Creighton University to oversee and broaden medical education programs at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s and Maricopa Integrated Health System

Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS), Creighton University School of Medicine, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and District Medical Group, Inc., have announced a new alliance aimed at increasing the number of doctors and other health professionals in Arizona in order to meet the state’s growing demand for physicians and other healthcare professionals.

The Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance, which was officially launched on Sept. 1, is designed to improve and expand current health education programs offered by each of the entities. The alliance will also develop new academic and clinical education programs in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health.

Currently, Arizona ranks 32nd in the nation in active MDs per 100,000 population. As the alliance matures, officials say the goal is to expand training opportunities in residencies, fellowships, and medical student spots. Having more training opportunities increases the likelihood that more physicians and other health care professionals who have studied in Arizona will remain and practice in the state.

“MIHS has been a leader in medical education since 1952, when we began our first residency program. Today, MIHS trains more than 400 physicians a year in 12 Graduate Medical Education programs,” said Steve Purves, MIHS President and CEO. “With this affiliation, we will continue to build that reputation by increasing the numbers of doctors and other healthcare professionals who will train in Arizona and stay in Arizona.”

“With this alliance, we have the opportunity to continue to strengthen Arizona’s reputation as the home of some of the best medicine in the nation,” said Patty White, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s. “The Affiliation will enable us to increase the numbers of doctors and other healthcare professional who will want to make Arizona their home.”

St. Joseph’s and MIHS have a total of more than 400 residents and fellows who would be part of the new program. In addition, Creighton University along with the alliance partners, has an accelerated nursing program, which has received state approval to enroll students in January of 2018.

“This is an exciting partnership that brings together a university recognized for providing outstanding training for students in the health sciences and healthcare providers known for their impressive history of caring for members of the greater Phoenix community,” said Creighton President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ.

For more than a decade, Creighton University, located in Omaha, Nebraska, has been an academic mainstay in Phoenix, sending medical students to St. Joseph’s for rotations. That relationship grew in 2009 when the Jesuit, Catholic University and St. Joseph’s established a Creighton campus for third- and fourth-year medical students at the Phoenix hospital.

Through the new alliance, Creighton’s role in Arizona will expand again, to become the sponsoring entity for the broader partnerships. While Creighton’s relationship will be enhanced, the partners will continue to offer educational training to students from other universities and programs.

“This partnership will be instrumental in providing for Arizona’s healthcare workforce needs and allowing us to continue to recruit excellent faculty for our medical students and residents,” said Dr. Kote Chundu, President and CEO of District Medical Group, which has over 650 credentialed providers representing all the major medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties.

This new alliance will foster expansion of health professions education that none of the partners could independently support:

  • Provide new subspecialty training programs (such as fellowships).
  • Offer strong integrated programs that span multiple care environments.
  • Increase health professionals who will train and practice in Arizona, serving Maricopa County and the rest of the state.
  • Offer diverse inter-professional education across the continuum.

DMG has a long and proud history of leadership in training physicians and with this affiliation, we have the opportunity to train the physician of the future and address the workforce needs of Arizona.

Being a physician is a journey, not a destination

July 26, 2017/ District Medical Group

Kote Chundu, MD – Professor of Child Health at the College and CEO of District Medical Group

Friday, July 14, 2017

Eighty first-year medical students at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix will receive the mantle of the medical profession on Friday, July 21, when they don their white coats for the first time. The White Coat Ceremony marks the students’ entry into clinical medicine and is a rite of passage in their journey toward a health care career.

The ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Phoenix Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix, 75 N. Second St. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m.

Kote Chundu, MD, professor of Child Health at the College and president and chief executive officer of District Medical Group, will address the students. His keynote is part of the ceremony’s history, where students are welcomed by a respected leader who represents the value system of the college.

Dean Guy Reed, MD, MS

A longtime faculty member, Dr. Chundu has been key to the continued clinical affiliation between the college and Maricopa Medical Center.

Guy Reed, MD, MS, the College of Medicine – Phoenix’s new dean, will also address the students. Dr. Reed is a renowned cardiologist, physician-scientist and health administrator.
Dr. Chundu will tell students that being a physician is a journey, not a destination.

“Medicine is a team sport,” he said. “It should be a lifelong goal not to compete, but to cooperate to improve patient care. The most important skill for a physician to acquire is learning to listen.”

Dr. Chundu has been a professor at the medical school since 1992. He has helped in the admissions process, served as a member of the dean’s search committee and on the Liaison Committee on Medical Education Self Study Taskforce Committee. He is board-certified in pediatrics, pediatric critical care medicine and neonatal and perinatal medicine.

He has stayed committed to the College of Medicine – Phoenix because of its community-centered environment, he said. “The distributive model of clinical training, a community-based emphasis and academic focus are some of the characteristics I like about this campus.”

While wearing a white coat means different things to different physicians, Dr. Chundu said to him, it represents the scientific foundations for the practice of medicine. “The white coat symbolizes the virtues of responsibility, humanity, respect and empathy.”

Cheryl O’Malley, MD, interim vice dean of Academic Affairs, said Dr. Chundu has a “long history of meaningful contributions providing patient care and as a leader and teacher. His words of advice and reflection as our students begin their careers will be very meaningful.”

District Medical Group is a nonprofit, multi-specialty physician group serving the greater Phoenix area and is the exclusive provider of all clinical services, administers all Graduate Medical Education programs and manages medical administrative functions at Maricopa Integrated Health Systems.

The group has supported student-related events, including the senior lunch and the White Coat Ceremony.

The White Coat Ceremony was initiated in 1993 at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. The widespread adoption of this celebratory event, currently practiced by 90 percent of medical schools, is endorsed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Beginning in 2007, the College of Medicine – Phoenix began holding the ceremony at the conclusion of the first academic block, Introduction to Medicine.

In addition to their white coats, students will receive a 3M Littmann Cardiology III Stethoscope from Banner University Medicine, the textbook “The Patient History: Evidence-Based Approach to Differential Diagnosis” from District Medical Group, and Keeping Healthcare Human pins from The Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
